Physicians have one of the top ten best jobs in the U.S. for 2020, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Jobs list.
The list also included five physician specialist roles: OB-GYNs, anesthesiologists, and surgeons tied for No. 17, pediatricians landed at No. 22 and psychiatrists were ranked 34th on the list.
To create the list, U.S. News & World Report examined seven specific factors for each occupation:
- Median salary
- Employment rate
- 10-year growth volume
- 10-year growth percentage
- Future job prospects
- Stress level
- Work-life balance
Jobs receive a score up to 10, 10 being best or most desirable, for each factor, and are ranked by their composite scores. Below are some of the scores the job of physician received in different categories:
- Median salary: 10
- Employment rate: 10
- Stress level: 2
- Work-life balance: 6
U.S. News determined that a high median salary and high employment rate outweigh a high stress level and average level of work-life balance.

Interesting that dentist (2nd), physician assistant (3rd), nurse practitioner (5th) jobs are rated above physician job.
I’d say that’s not too inaccurate. Stress level is taken into account.
