DO leader selected to serve as director of the Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce

In February, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) appointed Richard Calderone, DO, MPH, as the director of the Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce (OMPW).

“Dr. Calderone brings a wealth of public health expertise to this office. He understands the dire need for physicians in rural Mississippi. … I am excited to see what OMPW can achieve under his leadership,” said MSDH executive director and state health officer Dan Edney, MD.

Dr. Calderone is a native of Slidell, Louisiana, and was a graduate of the inaugural class of William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM). He completed his residency training at the University of Mississippi Medical Center as well as through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Calderone is also the president of the Mississippi Osteopathic Medical Association (MOMA) and the immediate past president of the South Mississippi Medical Society.

“I will serve our state by working with institutions and individuals to promote high-quality medical training, and work to retain physicians to care for Mississippians,” said Dr. Calderone.

Osteopathic medical student publishes empowering children’s book

At the end of 2024, Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM) student Brooke Birks, OMS IV, published a children’s book, “The Heroes Inside of You.” The book “transforms complex scientific concepts about the immune system into engaging, relatable stories for young readers,” Birks says.

Written and illustrated in collaboration with Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) Diversity Scholar Hang Nguyen, MS IV, “The Heroes Inside of You” introduces readers to characters like Bubbles (B-cell), Tate (T8 cell) and Macro Cleaning Man (Macrophage).

Birks says she hopes to spark curiosity about the body’s defenses and inspire a lifelong interest in health and wellness.

“The inspiration … came from my passion for making science accessible and my dedication to holistic care,” said Birks. “The book is not just a story; it’s a tool to empower children with knowledge about their own bodies.”

Vivid illustrations and action-packed adventures help teach young readers about how their immune system works to keep them safe and healthy. Birks says this aligns with the osteopathic philosophy of treating the whole person, body, mind and spirit, by fostering an early understanding of health and self-care.

Birks says she hopes “The Heroes Inside of You” inspires her fellow osteopathic medical students as well as residents and physicians to brainstorm innovative ways to positively contribute to health literacy.

“As I look ahead to my career as an osteopathic physician, I am inspired by my mission to provide patient-centered comprehensive care. By promoting health literacy through projects like ‘The Heroes Inside of You’ and advocating for systemic change, I hope to empower patients and communities to take an active role in their health,” Birks said. “Holistic medicine recognizes that physical, emotional and environmental factors all play a role in well-being, and I am proud to contribute to this mission with creativity, compassion and a commitment to equity.”

“The Heroes Inside of You” is available for purchase via Amazon in both paperback and eBook formats.
