Is there a doctor in the House? Physician victories in the 2018 midterm elections

Here’s a snapshot of all the physicians who won their Congressional elections in 2018.

The results are (mostly) in on the 2018 midterm elections, and three new physicians have been elected to Congress. Additionally, the 10 physicians in the House of Representatives all won their re-elections, as did the one physician in the Senate up for re-election.

Below is a list of all of the physicians who won their elections in 2018:

New physicians elected to Congress

Pennsylvania 13th Congressional District: U.S. Rep. John Joyce, MD, a Republican, was elected to his first term serving Pennsylvania in the House of Representatives. Dr. Joyce is a dermatologist and his nephew, a DO, recently joined his practice in Altoona.

Tennessee 7th Congressional District: U.S. Rep. Mark Green, MD, a Republican, was elected to his first term serving Tennessee in the House of Representatives. Dr. Green is a state senator, veteran, emergency physician and former CEO of Align MD.

Washington 8th Congressional District: U.S. Rep. Kim Schrier, MD, a Democrat, was elected to her first term serving Washington in the House of Representatives. Dr. Schrier is a pediatrician and will be the only doctor who is a woman serving in Congress.

Physicians re-elected to Congress

California 7th Congressional District: Ami Bera, MD, a primary care physician, won re-election to his 4th term serving California in the House of Representatives. Dr. Bera, a Democrat, currently sits on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

California 36th Congressional District: Raul Ruiz, MD, an emergency physician, won re-election to his 4th term serving California in the House of Representatives. Dr. Ruiz, a Democrat, currently sits on the Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Florida 2nd Congressional District: Neal Dunn, MD, a urologist, won his first re-election campaign to represent Florida in the House of Representatives. Dr. Dunn, a Republican, currently sits on the Committee on Agriculture, the Committee on Science, Space and Technology, and the Committee on Veterans Affairs.

Indiana 8th Congressional District: Larry Bucshon, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon, won re-election to his 5th term serving Indiana in the House of Representatives. Dr. Buchshon, a Republican, currently sits on the Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Kansas 1st Congressional District: Roger Marshall, MD, an obstetrician, won his first re-election campaign to represent Kansas in the House of Representatives. Dr. Marshall, a Republican, currently sits on the Committee on Agriculture, the Committee on Science, Space and Technology, and the Committee on Small Business.

Louisiana 5th Congressional District: Ralph Abraham, MD, a family physician, won re-election to his 3rd term serving Louisiana in the House of Representatives. Dr. Abraham, a Republican, currently sits on the Committee on Armed Services, the Committee on Agriculture, and the Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

Maryland 1st Congressional District: Andy Harris, MD, an orthopedic surgeon, won re-election to his 5th term serving Maryland in the House of Representatives. Dr. Harris, a Republican, currently sits on the Committee on Appropriations.

Tennessee 1st Congressional District: Phil Roe, MD, an obstetrician, won re-election to his 6th term serving Tennessee in the House of Representatives. Dr. Roe, a Republican, is currently the chairman of the Committee on Veterans Affairs, and sits on the Committee on Education and Workforce. Dr. Roe also runs the GOP Doctors Caucus.

Tennessee 4th Congressional District: Scott DesJarlais, MD, a family physician, won re-election to his 5th term serving Tennessee in the House of Representatives. Dr. DesJarlais, a Republican, currently sits on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the Committee on Armed Services, and the Committee on Agriculture.

Texas 26th Congressional District: Michael Burgess, MD, an ob-gyn, won re-election to his 9th term serving Texas in the House of Representatives. Dr. Burgess, a Republican, currently sits on the Committee on Energy and Commerce and the Committee on Rules.

Wyoming Senate: John Barrasso, MD, an orthopedic surgeon, won re-election to his 2nd full term serving Wyoming in the United States Senate (he was appointed in 2007 to fill a vacancy and won a special election in 2008). Dr. Barrasso, a Republican, is currently the chair of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and sits on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, the Committee on Indian Affairs, and the Committee on Foreign Relations.

Physicians who did not have elections in the 2018 cycle

Kentucky Senate: Rand Paul, MD, an ophthalmologist, who won his last election in 2016. Dr. Paul, a Republican, currently sits on the Committee on Foreign Relations, the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, as well as the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions that has jurisdiction over health care-related issues. Dr. Paul’s next election is in 2022.

Louisiana Senate: Bill Cassidy, MD, a gastroenterologist, won his last election in 2014 after he defeated incumbent Mary Landrieu. Dr. Cassidy, a Republican, sits on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, the Committee on Finance, the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, the Committee on Veterans Affairs, and the Joint Economic Committee.
