Topics

For the first time, the Association for Osteopathic Director and Medical Educators (AODME) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) will co-host the ACGME/AODME Pre-Conference for Osteopathic Programs and Institutions at the ACGME Annual Educational Conference. The conference will take place March 9-12, in Orlando, Florida.

The pre-conference on March 9 will include a variety of osteopathic educators and leaders in various stages of transitioning to ACGME accreditation, bringing together those who can best share knowledge and experiences during highly interactive sessions.

Lorenzo Pence, DO, ACGME’s senior vice president of osteopathic accreditation, shares the value of attending the conference.

Can you tell us about how the conference came about and what AODME and ACGME are hoping to accomplish during the program?

The ACGME is excited about partnering with AODME for the ACGME’s now-Annual Pre-Conference for Osteopathic Programs and Institutions. The 2016 Annual AODME Conference led us to explore this partnership.

It is a great opportunity for the ACGME and AODME to work together and use the expertise of both organizations to offer education to AOA programs in the midst of the application processes for ACGME accreditation and osteopathic recognition. Both organizations want to help programs be successful during this transition.

What will be most the valuable component of the pre-conference?

The pre-conference has both plenary and breakout presentations that allow programs in any stage of the process (new application, pre-accreditation, continued pre-accreditation, initial accreditation and osteopathic recognition) to gain insight and knowledge about the process for achieving and maintaining accreditation, as well as osteopathic recognition.

Program directors, DMEs, and DIOs will have the opportunity to attend sessions with Review Committee Executive Directors who have expansive knowledge and can answer questions about the application process for their specialties.

What other benefits can attendees expect?

Attendees will benefit from presentations about the rules of the match process (AOA and NRMP), an overview of osteopathic board certification for residents in ACGME programs, and a review of the requirements and resources for scholarly activity for faculty members and residents.

In addition, another session, “A Year in the Life of a Program Director,” will provide insight into the responsibilities of an ACGME program director.

With presentations on multiple GME topics of interest including osteopathic medicine, the Pre-Conference for Osteopathic Programs and Institutions provides a gateway to the ACGME Annual Educational Conference.
