News in brief TouroCOM-Harlem grads honored with state service award Jemima Akinsanya, DO, and Jean Shiraki, DO, received the Community Service Award of the Medical Society of the State of New York. June 16, 2016Thursday The DO Staff Contact The DO Staff Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Email Jemima Akinsanya, DO, is passionate about mentoring underrepresented minority students who are interested in careers in medicine, health and science. Jean Shiraki, DO, has used her policy expertise to plan health fairs and provide leadership in national and state medical societies, focusing on issues that affect minority communities. Both physicians, who just graduated from the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York, were recently honored with the Community Service Award of the Medical Society of the State of New York. The school’s executive dean, Robert Goldberg, lauded the graduates for their service. “Jemima helped broadcast our mission throughout Harlem, and harnessed students and faculty alike to become active and embrace all peoples while learning the field of medicine,” he noted. “Jean served as the representative of all 16 New York medical schools to the American Medical Association, earning a reputation among her peers for her health policy views and advocacy skills on a national scale.” Following graduation, Dr. Akinsanya will be starting a neurology residency at Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Shiraki will be a family medicine resident at the Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education in Washington, D.C.
