KCU-COM breaks ground on new campus in Joplin, Missouri

The campus, which will open in 2017, will be Missouri’s first new medical school in nearly 50 years.

In 2017, Missouri’s first new medical school in nearly 50 years will open its doors. It’s the Joplin campus of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCU-COM); the latter is located in Kansas City, Missouri.

In a groundbreaking ceremony held last week, Kansas City University president and CEO Marc Hahn, DO, noted that locating an osteopathic medical school in Joplin is especially poignant given that the city experienced a deadly tornado in 2011 that left 161 people dead. “KCU is proud to be a part of this community, which is emerging brighter and more resilient than ever,” Dr. Hahn said.

Community leaders broke ground on the site of the future Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences campus in Joplin, Missouri. The Joplin campus will open in 2017.

The new campus, which stems from a collaboration between KCU-COM, Mercy Hospital Joplin, Freedom Health System, the city of Joplin, and local leaders, is intended to help counter the shortage of primary care physicians in rural areas of the region.

How do we address growing concerns about rapid expansion of DO schools? Although we need more physicians is this a sustainable pace? I’m not sure how to best respond to people that argue we need to be focusing on clinical rotation and research improvement of existing schools rather than on expanding and creating more schools. Thank you in advance
