Research funding is available to DO, MD and PhD researchers conducting studies that address one of four research focus areas (RFAs) in three overall areas of focus approved by the AOA Board of Trustees: Osteopathic manipulative medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMM/OMT) Acute and chronic pain management The impact of the osteopathic approach on chronic disease and elderly care OMM observational and explorative-focused research studies addressing one of 14 research hypotheses designed to investigate the successful effects of OMM on specific diseases The AOA will support the development of research projects grounded in osteopathic medicine that have the most promising potential to impact individual patient outcomes and evidence-based medicine; facilitate collaboration within and outside the osteopathic community; and enhance the visibility of the osteopathic profession. Grants are available for the following applicants: New investigatorsA new investigator is a Principal Investigator (PI) who has completed their terminal research degree or end of postgraduate clinical training, whichever completion date is later, within the past 10 years. ResidentsA resident is a DO or MD in a residency program with osteopathic recognition and fulfilling residency, internship or fellowship requirements at an ACGME-accredited institution at the time of the award (June 2024) and is interested in conducting a clinical or health services research project that will make a significant contribution to osteopathic medicine. Osteopathic medical studentsAn osteopathic medical student is an individual fulfilling their coursework requirements at a COCA-accredited College of Osteopathic Medicine at the time of the award (June 2024).
