Jan. 6, 2021Wednesday The DO Staff Contact The DO Staff Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Email Twice a year, The Leapfrog Group assigns safety grades from A to F to over 2,600 acute care hospitals in the U.S. To determine a hospital’s grade, Leapfrog weighs 27 factors related to a hospital’s processes, environment and patient outcomes. Much of the data Leapfrog used came from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services; Leapfrog gathered additional data by surveying hospitals. Of the over 2,600 hospitals included in Leapfrog’s most recent hospital grades, released in December 2020, 34% earned an “A,” 24% earned a “B,” 35% earned a “C,” 7% a “D” and under 1% an “F.” One caveat is that, to assign the most recent grades, Leapfrog did not work from data collected during the height of COVID-19. Leapfrog said in a statement that its future hospital grades would take hospitals’ pandemic responses into account. The five states with the highest percentage of “A”-graded hospitals include Maine, Idaho, Delaware, Massachusetts and Oregon. At the other end of the spectrum, the five states with the lowest percentage of “A”-graded hospitals include Nebraska, West Virginia, Alaska, South Dakota and North Dakota.
