2 DOs elected to Federation of State Medical Boards leadership positions

The osteopathic medical profession was well-represented during the recent Federation of State Medical Boards’ (FSMB) annual meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Two DOs were elected to the FSMB’s leadership team during the 106th annual meeting on April 28. Anna Z. Hayden, DO, will serve on its Board of Directors and Scott Steingard, DO, will serve as chair-elect of the Board of Directors.

Dr. Hayden is a past president of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association. She is also immediate past president of the American Association of Osteopathic Examiners and currently serves on the AOA’s Physician Wellness Task Force.

Dr. Steingard is past president of the Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners in Medicine and Surgery and was medical coordinator for the Fiesta Bowl from 1988-2017.

FSMB represents the nation’s osteopathic and medical regulatory boards. The annual meeting brought together national experts to discuss current challenges and innovative ideas that will help shape the future of medical regulation.

DOs who participated in the annual meeting include:

• FSMB President and CEO Humayun J. Chaudhry, DO, discussed the new and ongoing initiatives and services undertaken by the FSMB to improve the quality, safety and integrity of health care.
• Dr. Steingard moderated a discussion on the regulatory aspects of regenerative and adult stem cell therapy, including the FSMB’s proposed policy on the practices.
• Dr. Hayden moderated a discussion on new strategies in the effort to address opioid use disorder, including the use of prescription drug monitoring programs, Suboxone treatment and other strategic interventions.
• John R. Gimpel, DO, president and CEO of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), and Dana C. Shaffer, DO, chair of the NBOME board of directors, discussed the latest developments and news from NBOME about COMLEX-USA, the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination.
