In the news: JAOA study finds foot wrap eases symptoms of restless legs syndrome

The study, which found that targeted pressure improved symptoms of restless legs syndrome, recently appeared on Chicago TV station WGN 9.

Patients with restless legs syndrome who wore a specially designed foot wrap reported a 90% improvement in symptoms, according to research published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association.

In contrast, in another study, participants who took ropinirole, the standard pharmaceutical treatment for restless legs syndrome, reported a 63% improvement in symptoms. Researchers at the Lake Erie Research Institute in Pennsylvania conducted the eight-week clinical trial with 30 patients with moderate to severe restless legs symptoms. The study’s findings were recently featured in a newscast from TV station WGN 9 Chicago.

Phyllis Kuhn, MS, PhD, the JAOA study's lead author, discusses the theorized mechanism behind restless leg syndrome and the device used to manage the symptoms.

In a news release, the study’s lead author, Phyllis Kuhn, MS, PhD, explained that the adjustable foot wrap works by creating targeted pressure on two foot muscles that can lessen restless legs syndrome symptoms. “By putting pressure on specific muscles in the feet, we are able to create a response in the brain that relaxes the muscles activated during RLS,” said Dr. Kuhn. “It’s a near perfect example of the body regulating itself without drugs, many of which have the potential for significant adverse side effects.”

To learn more about the foot wrap, patients are advised to consult their physician. To learn more about the research, read the complete study in the JAOA or contact lead researcher Phyllis Kuhn, MS, PhD, at pkuhnphd@aol.com.

I have Periodic Limb Movement Disorder. Would this foot wrap also help address the involuntary foot jerk movements which I apparently have in my sleep? I also have sleep apnea.

Loved the presentation but did not see where this pressure device could be obtained. Maybe it is not yet available? Please respond–I have friends counting on it!
