The 2015 JAOA study will receive the George W. Northup, DO, Medical Writing Award during the AOA’s Annual Business Meeting.

The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association (JAOA) announced the 2016 George W. Northup, DO, Medical Writing Award will go to the article “Lymphatic Pump Treatment as an Adjunct to Antibiotics for Pneumonia in a Rat Model.” The article appeared in the May 2015 issue of the JAOA.

The annual Northup Award recognizes contributions to the JAOA that have the potential to change the way osteopathic physicians think, practice medicine and conduct research.

Conducted by Lisa M. Hodge, PhD; Caitlin Creasy, MS; KiahRae Carter, MS; Ashley Orlowski, BS; Artur Schander, DO; and Hollis King, DO, PhD, the study is the first to show that osteopathic manipulative treatment techniques can enhance the efficacy of antibiotics when both are used to treat pneumonia patients.

The award will be presented during the AOA’s Annual Business Meeting in July.

Dr. Northup, the award’s namesake, was the AOA’s editor in chief for 26 years and the AOA’s 1958-1959 president.
