Earn CME through early childhood development online learning modules

DOs and students who complete a series of three education modules receive a professional development certificate from the Erikson Institute.

As part of an exciting collaboration with the Erikson Institute, the AOA recently launched the first in a series of online education modules designed to help physicians guide parents as they support early learning and development for their children.

The new module, titled “Enhancing Communication Using Facilitating Attuned Interactions (the FAN)” focuses on organizing patient visits efficiently in order to understand and address parents’ concerns. Participants will learn to read parents’ communication cues, as well as develop self-awareness and self-regulation strategies to help manage challenging interactions.

The activity has been approved for 2 AOA Category 1-B CME credits.

Development of two more modules is in progress, with launch anticipated this summer. Physicians who complete all three modules will receive a professional development certificate from Erikson Institute, as well as CME credit. Medical students who complete all three modules will also be eligible to earn a certificate.

DOs can play a pivotal role in helping parents acquire the skills needed to engage their children in reaching developmental milestones, according to Scott S. Cyrus, DO, a pediatrician from Tulsa who introduced the Erikson partnership to physicians attending OMED 2015. “We really need to look at how we’re engaging parents,” he said.
