Texas Medical Board changes rules to recognize DO certification

The board will now provide equal recognition to osteopathic continuous certification in relicensure for AOA board certified physicians.

The AOA scored a victory for the osteopathic medical profession in Texas when the state recently approved proposed changes to recognize DOs and osteopathic continuous certification.

Previously the Texas Medical Board recognized participation in the American Board of Medical Specialty’s maintenance of certification as meeting the state’s continuing medical education (CME) criteria for relicensure.

In a letter to the board, the AOA and the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association requested the rule be amended to provide equal recognition equivalent to lifelong competency demonstration for AOA board certified DOs through osteopathic continuous certification. This change will ease the relicensure burden for DOs in Texas.
