Research grants available for DOs, medical students and PhDs

Conducting research? Grants are available for projects that address the AOA’s five key focus areas.

The AOA is offering grant funding to DOs, osteopathic medical students and PhD researchers conducting studies that address one of five key focus areas:

  1. Chronic diseases & conditions
  2. Musculoskeletal injuries & prevention
  3. Osteopathic manipulative medicine/osteopathic manipulative treatment
  4. The osteopathic philosophy
  5. Pain management

Grant application cycles open on Nov. 1, 2018, and end on Jan. 31, 2019, with funded projects announced in June 2019. Grants also are available for new investigators and for organizations to present live CME on opioid prescribing.

Earlier this year, the AOA awarded more than $1.3 million in grant funding for research projects in the above focus areas.

Grants for physicians & PhD researchers

Obtain AOA grant funding for a research project that corresponds to RFAs (request for applications) in the AOA’s research focus areas.

DOs, MDs and PhDs can receive up to $100,000 for conducting an 18-month study and up to $150,000 for a 24-month study.

Grants for students, residents & fellows

Apply for an AOA Research Training Grant to support a basic science, clinical or health services research project.

Residents and fellows can receive up to $20,000 for conducting an 18-month study. Medical students can be awarded up to $5,000 for conducting a 6 to 12 month study tied to an existing project.

Grants for new investigators

Apply for an AOA New Investigator Grant to support a basic science, clinical or health services research project.

New investigators are those who have completed a terminal research degree or post-graduate clinical training in the last 10 years. New investigators can receive up to $50,000 to conduct an 18-month study.

Grants for opioid prescriber CME

Apply for an AOA grant that’ll allow your organization to present live CME on opioid prescribing. Grant submission ends on Dec. 31, 2018.
