2 Texas DOs receive academic promotions, including role as chancellor of UNT System

The University of North Texas (UNT) System has named Michael Williams, DO, as its next chancellor. When he assumes the role, Dr. Williams will become the system’s fourth chancellor. His promotion makes history, as this is the first time a physician will serve as chancellor of UNT System. Dr. Williams is currently president of the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth (HSC) and will continue to serve in this role as the UNT Board of Regents searches for his replacement. In his new position as chancellor, Dr. Williams will be responsible for all aspects of UNT System operations.

“I am excited and energized for the opportunity to lead these world-class universities forward,” says Dr. Williams. “The potential has never been greater, and the opportunity is endless. I look forward to positioning the entire UNT System as a thought leader in higher education, and propelling meaningful, innovative ideas forward that will shape the future.”

Dr. Williams previously practiced anesthesiology and critical care medicine in Texas for 20 years and served as CEO of Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg, Texas.

“The board selected Dr. Williams as our next chancellor because we believe in his vision for, and deep understanding of, our system and member institutions, as well as his proven track record transforming HSC,” said Laura Wright, UNT System board chair. “Dr. Williams’ innovative mindset, values-based approach, and focus on customer service will be essential in leading us into a changing future.”

Along with Dr. Williams, David Garza, DO, has also recently received an academic promotion.

Dr. Garza, a family medicine physician and AOA Board of Trustees member, will now serve as Interim Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) in San Antonio. Dr. Garza previously served as founding program director for UIWSOM’s family medicine residency program.

Although the rapid transition from private practice to his current position has been both exhilarating and challenging for Dr. Garza, he is thrilled to be taking on a new role.

“Though I truly do miss my patients and the day-to-day excitement and challenges of providing care for them, I take comfort and consolation in knowing that the care and attention we provide for each future physician at UIWSOM will be multiplied as they in turn provide care and attention to their patients,” says Dr. Garza.
