JAOA launches new podcast series

On Oct. 6, the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association launched the first episode of its new podcast series, “Behind the Research.”

In this podcast, researchers will talk about the larger implications and context of their findings from recently published articles in the JAOA.

“[The podcast] is designed to give you all a glimpse into not only what the authors did, but also how they did it,” Melissa Schmidt, director of the JAOA, says in the first episode. “In the publish or perish culture in which we all exist, the focus on the process can be lost in favor of a focus on the end result: publication.

“Meaningful research, not just the kind that gets published, but the kind that makes an impact, is undertaken to answer actual questions DOs might have.”

The episode features Katherine Lincoln, DO, and Beth Wagner, DO, who discuss the research behind their recent JAOA article that evaluate state medical licensing boards’ compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements regarding mental health questions. The article also compares osteopathic boards with their MD counterparts in the same states.
