New task force plans to innovate certifying board services

Group aims to advance osteopathic certification to meet physician needs in evolving medical landscape.

The AOA has announced creation of a new Certifying Board Services Task Force focused on innovating osteopathic certification to meet physician needs in the rapidly changing field of health care.

“The task force brings together an expert team of osteopathic physicians from various specialties and backgrounds to streamline and simplify existing board certification processes and present recommendations for consideration,” says Eileen M. Singer, DO, the task force’s chair. “Among our goals are to continuously enhance the quality of our examinations and align certification processes across all specialty boards.”

The formation of the CBS task force supports one of the AOA’s chief priorities outlined in its Strategic Plan: enhancing board certification services.

Primary areas the task force will address include:

  • Improving the customer experience through user-friendly processes.
  • Continuously increasing quality and enhancing the standards of certification exams.
  • Simplifying the osteopathic continuous certification process.
  • Driving technological enhancements that will improve the overall board certification administration process.

The task force will release a preliminary report at the upcoming Board Certification Summit on July 30-31 in Chicago.

Members of the CBS task force:

  • Eileen M. Singer, DO (chair)
  • Richard D. Kimmel, DO
  • Janice A. Knebl, DO, MBA
  • Bradford W. Landry, DO, MSPT
  • Robert J. George, DO
  • Jennifer Kendall Thomas, DO

  1. Mocking MOC

Many DOs are fleeing the AOA BOS and seeking alternative board certification process. I suggest that the CBS seeks a path to eliminate the re-certification exam as some specialty with ABMS has already done to avoid defection. Also, find a more educational friendly format for OCC/MOC, such as a VDO, Short reading (3 to 5 pages) material every month followed by a quiz sent to the email/mail every month.
