Advocacy in action: Massachusetts changes regulations to recognize DOs

The AOA scored a victory for the osteopathic medical profession in Massachusetts when the state approved proposed changes to recognize DOs in state regulations.

Last July, the AOA, the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists, and the Massachusetts Osteopathic Society requested amendments to proposed regulations in Massachusetts seeking equal recognition of osteopathic physicians and AOA board certification for mental health services in the state.

Originally, the regulations defined “psychiatrist” as an MD certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. The state responded to this joint request by updating the regulations to include recognition of DOs certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.
