April 15, 2020Wednesday The DO Staff Contact The DO Staff Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Email Topics In Memoriam AOA Past President Gilbert Bucholz, DO, 86, who led the association from 1991-1992, died April 5 at the Stein Hospice In-Patient Care Center in Sandusky, Ohio. The following information about Dr. Bucholz’s life was shared by Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory. Dr. Bucholz was born on Sept. 4, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Sam and Helen Bucholz. He was a retired radiologist who throughout his life served many professional osteopathic organizations at the state and national levels. In addition to serving as AOA president, Dr. Bucholz served as president of the Ohio Osteopathic Association, president of the American Osteopathic Foundation, and president of the American Osteopathic College of Radiology. Dr. Bucholz served on multiple boards, including the board of directors of the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was also a leading force behind the establishment of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Bucholz was also a team physician for the world wrestling team at the 1968 Olympics. Dr. Bucholz was a 33rd Degree Mason, where he was also a member of the Royal Order of Jesters. He was a pilot and sailing enthusiast who enjoyed extensive travel. As an adventure pilot, Dr. Bucholz flew in many different countries. He sailed competitively in Lake Erie as well as in multiple international races, including the Sydney Hobart race. Dr. Bucholz is survived by his wife, Jan (nee Weske); sister, Rose Cohen; nephews, Robert (Emily) Cohen, David Cohen, Howard (Susan) Cohen and their children. Dr. Bucholz was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Helen Bucholz. Private family services will be held. A public celebration of life will be announced and held at a later date.
