The AOA’s Bureau of International Osteopathic Medicine (BIOM) will present its 20th annual international seminar, “Social Medicine and the Ethics of Providing Health Care in the Global Context,” during OMED 2018 in October in San Diego.
Michelle Morse, MD, and Zadock Sacks, MD, co-founding directors of EqualHealth, will be presenting the keynote address on social medicine. Their presentation will be followed by a panel discussion on social medicine, ethics and providing care in a global context.
In addition to the seminar, BIOM is sponsoring an abstract competition and poster session. The deadline for submission is July 20, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. CT. Winners will be announced Aug. 20, 2018.
The competition is open to all osteopathic medical students and residents. All entries must be focused on the entrants’ experiences with global health and/or providing health care internationally.
The competition’s three categories are:
- Global Health Research abstracts (up to 500 words). See peer review process guidelines for more details.
- Reflections on Global Health Outreach experiences (up to 500 words).
- Essays in Narrative Medicine, a creative writing genre focused on illness, healing, and clinical care (up to 1,500 words).
Each category will have a first- and second-place prize.
- First place: $750 and a chance to present your project at the BIOM international seminar
- Second place: $500
There will also be a grand prize to the top overall entrant of $1,500. The recipient of the grand prize will also have the opportunity to present at the BIOM seminar.
